GoldenGate for Live Reporting off-loads reporting activity from the production database to a lower-cost secondary system, where the most current data is always available to support real-time reporting needs.
KEY BENEFITS:
- Provides real-time data at a secondary system for reporting and data access purposes
- Eliminates processing demands at the primary system
- Easily off-loads reporting support to a secondary, possibly lower-cost system
- Ensure data accuracy, completeness and integrity between systems
Business and IT Challenges
Reporting solutions and tools come in many flavors, but at the heart of reporting is the ability to utilize the most accurate, best data available to support end-users' needs. Many of today's reporting needs are now advancing to a "live reporting" stage where users need to access and leverage the most current data available, and at any time they wish to access that information. For those scenarios, the IT group must deliver an improved data integration solution.
Challenges for Enabling Real-Time Reporting
To achieve access to real-time data, batch processing approaches such as ETL won't suffice. Therefore, it is quite common for reporting functions to run queries against a production, OLTP, or other business-critical database system, rather than wait for the next batch process of data. While those queries get at recent data, this practice creates processing demands that inevitably cause performance degradation to that source system. As more queries and more data requests hit that primary database, performance continues to rapidly decline and transaction processing becomes compromised.
For "live" real-time reporting enablement, a better solution is needed, one that can allow the business to off-load reporting activity from the primary or production databases to lower-cost systems, yet still provide access to the real-time data.
GoldenGate for Live Reporting
In the Live Reporting solution, GoldenGate immediately captures data from OLTP and other source systems and moves it in real time to a secondary database target(s) used to support the needs for queries and reporting. This secondary database can be a different database and/or platform from the source(s), so that the IT group can manage overall costs and more readily take advantage of new open source technologies.
As a result, the primary systems can now operate at a much higher performance while the needs for improved real-time reporting are met via the new target database.
With Live Reporting, the primary and secondary systems can be kept in synch at all times, so that the most current transactional data is always available with guaranteed integrity to support reporting activities. An added benefit to this total Live Reporting solution is that in certain implementations, the secondary system can also serve as a ready-to-go-backup or failover database in the event of an outage or interruption at the primary.
