High Availability and Disaster Tolerance Solutions:
GoldenGate for Active-Active

GoldenGate for Active-Active is a software solution that allows for highest availability and performance on critical systems, by processing, distributing, and synchronizing transactional data across multiple databases -- while delivering excellent features for data conflict detection and resolution.

KEY BENEFITS:

  • Continuous operations for mission-critical transactional processing systems
  • Optimized workload management
  • Detects and resolves data conflicts and collisions
  • Heterogeneous support
  • Bi-directional, real-time data movement for database synchronization

Business and IT Challenges

One of the most effective ways to enable increased availability and performance for database infrastructures is to establish an "Active-Active" environment, which distributes/shares database transactions across multiple databases. Beyond disaster recovery and tolerance, active-active configurations facilitate continuous operations. Active-active configurations not only offer the additional raw capacity but also the flexibility to optimize workload management. But with all the tremendous availability and performance benefits that can be reaped, implementing an active-active solution is not trivial. The key ingredients include real-time data movement, conflict detection and resolution, and support for heterogeneous environments.

GoldenGate for Active-Active (Dual-Active, Dual Site)

A solution that should be evaluated for any active-active configuration is offered by GoldenGate Software. GoldenGate focuses on providing Transactional Data Management (TDM) solutions that enable high volumes of transactional data to be moved across heterogeneous IT environments with sub-second speed. GoldenGate's Transactional Data Management platform consists of a variety of decoupled modules that can be combined across the enterprise to provide maximum flexibility, modularity, and performance. It is an asynchronous solution with synchronous-like behavior.

Key technical features that are intrinsic to GoldenGate's support for active-active configurations are:

Flexible Topology Support and Bi-Directional Configurations -- Because of its decoupled modular design, GoldenGate easily supports a wide variety of topologies. These include one-to-one, one-to-many, many-to-one, and many-to-many -- for unidirectional and bi-directional configurations. For unlimited scalability, cascading topologies can be created to eliminate any potential bottlenecks. By staging specific sets of database changes on the source or target system, different TDM requirements can be met through a single pass on the data source. Each set of staged data can contain unique or overlapping sets of data.

Conflict Detection and Resolution -- When both systems are processing data transactions and the activity is shared across multiple systems, detecting and addressing conflicts across them becomes and essential requirement for any active-active configuration. GoldenGate provides a wide variety of conflict detection and resolution options to provide the necessary flexibility and adaptability for a wide range of requirements. Conflict detection and resolution options can be implemented globally, object-by-object, based on data values and complex filters, and through event-driven criteria including database error messages.

Heterogeneity -- Because GoldenGate decouples the data source and target, its architecture easily facilitates heterogeneity and stages changed data between the systems in a universal data format called GoldenGate Trails. This provides flexibility in the choice of hardware, operating system, and databases for sources and targets, and can accommodate unplanned outages as well as system, database, and application maintenance activities without interruption. And unlike architectures that implement a tight "process-to-process" coupling, this decoupled architecture provides each module the ability to perform its tasks independent of other modules or components.

Sub-Second Latency -- GoldenGate's capture, enhance, route, and delivery processes can move thousands of committed data transactions between systems with sub-second speed. There is very minimal impact on the source system and infrastructure, thus ensuring high performance with high data volumes.

Dual-Active for Teradata -- GoldenGate is the only solution that can capture changed data in real time from Teradata, thereby enabling dual-active configurations that synchronize two (or more) distributed Teradata Warehouses. This can be achieved without geographical distance constraints.

GoldenGate for BASE24 Dual Site -- GoldenGate provides a software solution that enables Dual Site processing for ACI Worldwide's BASE24 application on the HP Nonstop platform. This is delivering active-active, continuous availability solutions for ATM and transaction processing systems within many of our banking, financial, and retail customers.
